Make Along with Alex Jones: A Handbuilding Workshop

Join WPA in welcoming Alex Jones, an Auckland-based potter who works exclusively in handbuilding. Self-taught and deeply process-driven, Alex has developed a distinctive style rooted in working with soft slabs and other intuitive approaches to clay. A 2025 Portage Awards finalist and represented by Public Record in Ponsonby, Alex brings a fresh and thoughtful perspective to contemporary ceramics.

This session offers a chance to listen, learn, and make along as Alex shares his loose approach to form-making and the decision-making processes that guide his work. Participants are encouraged to BYO clay and create small maquettes during the workshop.

Workshop structure:
Hour 1: Introduction to maquette building and a discussion of Alex’s decision-making process
Hour 2: Demonstrations of techniques including soft slab building, coiling, large-scale pinching, “pulling” on a banding wheel, and paddle compression
Hour 3: Guided make-along session with support for refining your maquettes
