Slips and Underglaze: Production, Use and Applications with Richard Stratton

Learn how to make your own underglazes, base slip and coloured slips to apply to your raw pottery, variants will also be explained such as engobes washes etc.

Once the slip and underglazes are made, tutor Richard Stratton will dive into explanations into the application techniques such as (marbling, mono printing, trailing) will be discussed and demonstrated then the participants can practise these various techniques demonstrated with their own slips and underglazes.

Goals of Class:
By the end of this class, students will and have the skills and understanding to:

  • be able produce their own underglazes and various slips to decorate their wares with. 

  • have a better understanding of various decoration techniques, materials and tools used in these processes, this will enable self-sufficiency in the area of decoration media production.

  • deal with problem solving in adjustment in slip, engobe types, to be able to create a personalised colour palette. 

PRIOR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. Previous experience in glaze making (Basic understanding) of ceramic materials. This will be a small course of only 6 participants. Class meets in the Potter-in-Residence room.
