Surface and Form with Imogen Carter | 1-Day Workshop

  • Wellington Potters Association 130 Grant Road Thorndon New Zealand (map)

Spend a full day exploring the rich dialogue between shape and surface in this hands-on, playful workshop with our Potter-in-Residence, Imogen Carter.

This one-day workshop invites you to experiment boldly — layering pattern, texture, and imagery onto handbuilt clay forms while developing your construction skills.

Throughout the day, you’ll explore a dynamic range of decorative techniques including sgraffito, paper-cut stencils, mishima inlay, monoprinting, and lino cutting. Alongside these surface processes, Imogen will guide you through slab and coil building methods, helping you construct forms that feel intentional, tactile, and expressive. Whether you lean toward graphic pattern, subtle texture, or narrative imagery, this workshop will help you discover new ways to integrate surface and structure into cohesive ceramic works.

This workshop is ideal for makers with some clay experience who want to deepen their understanding of surface decoration, as well as more advanced practitioners looking to expand and refine their decorative vocabulary.
