Kurinuki Basics | 1-Day Workshop

  • Wellington Potters Association 130 Grant Road Thorndon New Zealand (map)

Fancy some meditative carving to create beautiful kurinuki objects?

Kurinuki is a Japanese term referring to the handbuilding technique of starting with a solid block of clay and hollowing it out to create an interior. Join tutor Ingrid Peek for this one-day workshop that will provide students with the basics of the technique to create an open teabowl and a lidded vessel.

No experience is required – just bring some trimming and texturing tools (see list below) and lots of patience for carving. Clay will be provided — take all your trimmings home (there will be plenty)! By the end of the day, you will have largely completed your two items (however some refinement may be required in your own time).

Bisque and glaze firing is the responsibility of the students.

Materials/Tools to bring:

  • Own trimming tools (credit card / rib, wooden knife, loop tools, dessert/soup spoons)

  • Texturing tools or objects (kitchen tools, child’s toy, wood / shell, etc etc)

  • A wire or wiggle wire (or springs)

  • Apron/ towel
More details will be emailed a week before the class.

Note: the class requires a LOT of carving so this may not suit people with repetitive strain / wrist / hand issues.
