Hand-built Gremlins with Peter Rumble | 1-Day Workshop

  • Wellington Potters Association 130 Grant Road Thorndon New Zealand (map)

Spend a day exploring character-driven ceramics in this hands-on workshop led by our gremlin-master Peter Rumble.

Using a combination of moulds and traditional hand-building techniques, you’ll create your own expressive gremlin sculpture from scratch.

Designed to be accessible for all skill levels, this workshop requires no prior experience. Peter will guide you step-by-step through the process, demonstrating essential techniques while encouraging creative freedom and personal expression.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn how to:
- Create press-moulded hemispheres to form the gremlin’s head
- Build arms and legs using cylinder techniques and varied joining methods
- Shape, bevel-cut, and position limbs for balance and personality
- Strengthen joins to ensure structural integrity
- Cut and refine facial features
- Assemble the full figure
- Add expressive details such as hair, ears, textures, and accessories
- Sculpt feet, shoes, or boots for both stability and character
- Apply final refinements to bring your gremlin to life

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a fully constructed gremlin sculpture ready for drying and firing, along with a solid foundation in practical hand-building techniques you can apply to future projects.

All materials—including clay and an artist’s knife set—are included in the workshop fee.
