Cracking Surfaces | 1-Night Workshop

  • Wellington Potters Association 130 Grant Road Thorndon New Zealand (map)

Dive into the art of intentional cracking — transforming a process often seen as a flaw into a powerful surface language.

Led by Paola Nigris, this one-day workshop explores slabs, slips, and resist techniques to show how controlled drying, material choice, and timing can create rich, expressive textures — each with its own character and unpredictability.

No experience is needed. This class is open to anyone curious about surface, texture, and playful experimentation.

What you’ll work on
Creating texture by drying and cracking the surface of clay slabs using slip, sodium silicate, stencils, and kohiki slip. Demonstrations are followed by supported making time to experiment with and refine each technique.

Outcome
By the end of the class, you’ll have at least one finished piece of greenware featuring your own intentional cracked surface.
